Content Development – A teacher’s role

Knowledge is derived from the teacher or book or CD or DVD.  Skill is to be practiced. Wisdom is acquired by experience.  Today, all are needed for a learner at different proportions. “If you tell me, I will forget; if you show me I will try to remember; if you involve me I will start learning”. This is the famous quote from Confucius.

Many attempts are made to convert the  principles, concepts, definitions, laws, experiments, questions, etc into  digital contents by many companies.

Jewels are many; Gold is one. Ideas are many! Concept is one! Photosynthesis is a concept. But it is taught in different levels in different ways. That is alright. But for the same level of audience, should we have different animation clips? A teacher needs a  simple animation that is sufficient to transfer the concept to the student. I have attempted to showcase some of my sample work in storyboard, animation clips, video clips, youtube clips with different audience levels such as entry, normal and advanced. For many of the e-learning professionals and companies ADDIE is the best model to get ready with the course material, whether it is a CBT or ILT or WLT!

Every subject matter expert is looking for a good animation for his each concept.  It should run like an ad-film in a short span of time and should reach the learners. Some call it nugget and a few call it concept. Let this smallest concept-blowup be called by any name. But, it should be nut in shell without involving too much text and pompous multimedia. It should ultimately serve the purpose of ensuring 100% knowledge transfer.

Content development is the teacher’s role. An instructional designer is the advocate of learners.  As a professional content developer I don’t want my contents dictated by any visual director and the so-called project managers.  The fate of our Indian e-learning companies is dragged down due to unimaginable delivery schedule and over enthusiastic content heads. Let the heads go to forest. I invite the sincere hands that work constantly with the keypad and mouse in instructional designing and visual designing.  The e-learning companies should stop overacting on the road-show and should should focus more on animation only.  If any teacher or professor is ready to come forward to develop his own course, he need not worry on whom to approach. There are so many authoring tools available. Teachers should be exposed to these authoring tools and should be trained in instructional designing and content developing.  Please click here to visit one of my web pages where I have listed various authoring and content management tools.
